One of my current projects is turning an old van norman piston grinder into a cam grinder for small engines (cam length up to 10"). Took me a year to find the machine. So far the worst part has been trying to work up a plan for indexing the cams in the machine for various centerlines. This will save on the amount of patterns I need to make.

Nov 20, 2017. #1. Background. I've owned it about 3 months. Used it about 6 times with no issues. Then 7th time it wouldn't start. It has a broken throttle that leave it on full throttle. I've replaced starter, both coils, and spark plugs. Compression test shows about 50psi in on and 60 in the other and both have about 50% leak down.

The problem with grinding the cam to clear a crank is, the cam and cam gears are angled. The end play on the crank and the end play on the cam will cause them to walk into one another unless you cut more than half the width of the lobe which could cause excessive lifter wear. Witty, just grind the top of the crank to clear the cam.
