The 1681 mini lathe milling attachment replaces the compound rest on the mini lathe. The vise opening is 1.9". The width of the vise is 2.6" and the depth is 1.4". The travel is 3.6". The dial is graduated in 0.025 mm (approximately 0.001") and there are 60 divisions, so the advance is 1.5 mm (0.059") per revolution.

Although I have a mill, I came across an inexpensive Atlas milling attachment and bought it for my 11" Logan for basically the same reason. I had to make the necessary plug to attach it to the cross slide, but otherwise the 10"-12" is an excellent fit on my lathe (which has a height from the cross slide, with the compound removed, to the centerline of the spindle 3").

A burke #4 was my 2nd. mill in the early 70's. It was a REAL machine capable of doing real work compared to the Atlas. I'd have loved to have found a vertical head for mine at the time,but this was ages before the internet. I fully recommend the Burke #4,and it isn't so heavy that a couple of guys can't move it about.

235. Feb 5, 2016. #3. A few added accessories and you can do a lot with your Atlas lathe. It depends on what you need to get done. I used the Atlas milling attachment to cut a Woodruff slot on a 3/4" shaft, very successfully. I have also cut V-grooves in small brass and aluminum vise jaws with excellent results.

For the record, the milling attachment for sale is a No. 500A. 10-501 is the part number of the main casting. The unit shown will fit 10" Serial No. 3970 (probably a 10D) and above and 12" models probably from 101.07361, 101.07381 and 101.07400 on. The milling attachment uses for a vertical slide the cross slide of the lathe.

I appreciate all the replies. After fighting with my milling attachment for the last couple of weeks I am more determined than ever to get a benchtop mill, but probably something beefier than the little 200 lb mini-mills. Time to save some $$$! I will say that getting a 6 flute high $$$ Niagara endmill did wonders for my Atlas' milling performance.
