Even though the floors generally have 6″ to 10″ of poured Gypcrete as their foundation, Gypcrete is still a rigid hard surface and can readily transmit impact noise to the unit below. One exception is with a nail down wood floor where you need to lay down a wood subfloor or wood furring strips to nail into.

A 9" might suffice (we used those for smoothing floors for glue down vinyls), but if you're looking to level out a floor it's going to take some time grinding, and that means you should really just look at a 10"+ upright, or bigger still. Make sure it's specifically designed for concrete grinding.

Note that the gypsum underlayment must be at least ¾ in. (19 mm) over the subfloor. To determine the gypsum underlayment depth, core the floor by drilling through the gypsum until the wood subfloor is detected. If after cleaning and coring the surface, areas are under ¾ in. (19 mm), a UL Classified gypsum-based product must be used.
