Ball mill the charcoal and sulphur mix for about 3 hours (without adding any potassium nitrate). Add 75 parts of potassium nitrate (powdered) to the charcoal and sulphur mix in the ball mill. Also add 6 parts water to the mix before ball milling, this will dramatically reduce the probability of accidental ignition of the mixture during milling.

Milling Black Powder - posted in Pyrotechnics: Just wanted to get a poll on varying options of most efficient yet safest way to mill black powder without a ball mill. I used to use a coffee grinder however the last time I milled some I resorted to a mortar and pestle instead, which was far too much work. I know ball milling is the most common for large quantities.

To grind a single chemical (vs. a mix like black powder) using a ball mill, fill your mill jar half full of hardened lead or brass grinding media, and 25% full of potassium nitrate. Turn the mill on and come back in an hour. Your nitrate should be light and fluffy. If not, continue grinding it 'til it's fine powder with no chunks or grains.

The biggest danger from ball mills is the danger of explosion. Never ball mill BP indoors and always use non-sparking milling media. I use50 caliber lead balls but I also have used brass chunks cut from 1/2 to 5/8 bar. Don't use marbles or steel balls of any sort. I personally think ball mills are safe if used to mill BP (not other propellants!);
