Power draw bar for step pulley mill 12-24-2020, 03:20 PM After watching a couple of videos on DIY power drawbars, it seems to me that of them address how the draw bar is made to bump the collet out of it's taper.

The socket is a 1/2″ drive 12 point 3/4″ impact socket. I found a 1/4″ hex drive to 1/2″ square drive adapter at the big box store and Loctited it into the impact driver. It's ridiculously high and looks even crazier on the mill, but it's worth it since it makes tool changes easy. It takes about 10 seconds to change out a collet.

I find that for normal wrench based draw bar work that I don't need a spindle lock. The impact wrench when just used by hand on my mill without using the second wrench for the WUT doesn't really turn the spindle. But now that I have an AC servo I'm finding it acts as a brake and prevents the spindle from turning.

There are 4 wires to the impact driver on the top of the drawbar, 2 going to the 240V pneumatic solenoid that forces the impact driver down to engage with the drawbar and 3 red wires that come from the main cabinet. These 3 red wires are 240V but appear to be signal rather than power connections, judging by the circuit on the PCBA.

It's fairly simple as you'd expect. It looks rather like the Kurt and Align drawbar engagement solenoids that are widely used on US Bridgeport-type machines fitted with the R8 collet system. And of course, the impact driver solution applies generally to manual machines - automatic machines tend to have pullstud toolchangers.

Feb 18, 2017. #7. The Griz specs are peak amperage and maybe locked rotor or momentary peak torque. At that level it would break the drawbar if that was continuous and the motor would be huge. I would look at an electric impact drill or something with a clutch so you could set the torque limit.

A few years ago I installed a Kurt power drawbar on my Lagun cnc mill. It has been one of the best upgrades I've done. Despite the simplicity it was expensive. It also took a fair amount of time to install. So I have this Grizzly mill that has a riser block installed on it. It's REALLY tall. I have to stand on something to get to the drawbar.
