Cylindrical grinding aluminum. I've been asked at work the feasibility of cnc cylindrical grinding some aluminum parts. Material is either 6061 or 7075 likely T6 temper (I was not given more details than that). The parts are about 113" long and the OD is a little over 5". The entire OD needs to be ground to 5.XXX" +/- .001".

I would assume that the process to make a crankshaft would be no different than any other precision hardened steel component. Heat treating is done prior to grinding because heat treating causes distortion in the material. From my experience in tool making there should be no need to have it hardened after grinding as it is already hard.

George, Here in OKC the crank grinders dislike grinding T cranks with 1/16" radius because their grinding wheels have a smaller radius for modern cars. Several have re-radiused their wheels for T cranks, at our request, which means they need to re-establish the radius on the wheel back for modern cars.
