The 2x48 has sealed bearings, which means metal dust won't kill it as quickly. I see Doug's point, because if you stick with this you WILL get a stronger grinder (grinders are for metal, sanders are for wood. This is an important distinction to look for in any product description!) and the money spent on this may be seen as wasted.

Unlike the EERF this will be a horizontal and vertical grinder. It's still being tweaked and I am waiting on some parts to come in. As soon as I get the base done it will be ready for paint. The CAD files will be free to download of course. And anyone who makes alterations or new features can have their files posted for others to use.

One of the blades for my block plane. That bevel is flat. To resharpen it on stones would mean honing away all that metal on the cutting edge down to a 20 degree angle to reestablish the primary bevel. Then we'd have to adjust and hone the secondary bevel (in this case 25 degrees). Yuck! That's a lot of work, and that's why I have a grinder now.

Does anyone know where I can get a used 2x72 belt grinder? Maybe one that's cheap and needs some tlc to get working properly. I have my 1x30 I started with, but it's time to upgrade and funds are low. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I personally have machines with 2hp and 3hp and can stall out the 2hp. mind you its a horizontal so it might not translate. seems to be only a $20 difference on the pheer site?

Lets talk about 2x72 grinders. So I recently decided that a 2x72 grinder would be a good upgrade to the shop. A member of the local smithing guild had access to a laser cnc and had a few of these frames cut.

He took the EERF grinder plans and gets them made in large quantities. I took the EERF plans to a local shop to be waterjet cut out for me and they wanted something like 3x the cost of his kit to do it. Of course, it's always that way for one-off machining work. Anyway, mine's been great for the better part of 3 years now; no complaints.
