I've got a Quorn spindle in which I modified the preload by using "wave washers" from McMaster Carr. IIRC they're specified by diameter and material thickness which governs the spring rate. For the Quorn, a preload of 8 pounds is suggested so I looked for washers that could be compressed to a point to provide that.

Anyway, Throp was using the Kennet which is a far simpler grinder. He concluded that he used the Kennet everyday but the Quorn infrequently. Frankly, my Quorn should be under the bench- but somewhere. So is the Kennet- but don't ask where. My Clarkson is there but it is too heavy and a bit big to lose- lower down.
