You will never get the edges close enough to cut evenly, which means your endmill will wear out prematurely. Don't even think about trying to hand grind the periphery, and if the end is dull, so too will be the periphery. You will be crucified by your customers if you attempt to buy used endmills and hand sharpen them and sell them as "regrinds."

So, suppose I have a 4 or 6 fluted flat nosed end mill. Unlike drill bits which cut from the top, end mills do most of their work from on the side. Is there a jig, or a process which would help to sharpen these HSS tools up? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Dan

Sharpening the ends of end mills is very easy. It is ground like a drill is...... A primary angle usually about 7 degrees..... A secondary angle for clearance. The big difference is, the ends of the flutes are ground to a 2 degree angle to "dish" . This is so the corners of the flutes cut and the center does not rub.
