The bottom line is, the microlux milling machine that the same store sells (Micro-Mark) would end up costing me about $300 more. In other words, by the time I buy a drill press, X-Y table, milling vise, and some end mills, I'm looking at $350 including shipping. The same setup in a real microlux milling machine would only cost $650.

Micro Mark buys the same low end lathes and mills as you will find from Grizzly and Harbor Freight, et al. They are made by a Chinese factory, usually called Seig, and they slap any name on their machines that the importer wishes to pay for. Micro Mark is mainly an importer tool and hobby supply.

The problem buying a milling machine to cut wood is that with a few notable exceptions they are generally designed to cut metal. As a result the speed range is often around 200 - 2800 rpm, ideal for cutting metal. One of my favourite tools is the fly cutter. It's great for squaring up stock on the mill and has a sweep up to nearly 3 inches.
