Also the U-shaped piece that helps hold the burr cover and the center shaft in place has the casting number A161. And the plate with the markings on to know how far open the feed gate is has A131 on it.

Depending on what mill you are using, it is best to run the engine at a speed that will yield the correct speed at the mill. Best to look up the factory speeds if possible to determine it. Also when not cracking corn, I open the burr plates so the noise disapears. (remember one plate is fixed and one floats with the adjuster on most mills).

Here is a nice Appleton burr mill. It seems to be in great shape and pretty much ready to use. I opened it up and the burrs or plates look good to me. The bearings seem nice and tight. The shaker mechanism has a cast iron piece riveted to a tin piece. Those riveted have pulled through the tin.

Up for bid is a set of 2 cast iron grain grinding plates for a feed/burr mill or possibly an old corn sheller plates. They measure 9 3/4" across x 1/2" thick. Marked with a patent date of"Oct. 13. 1925 and"Jumbo" which is harder to read on one plate. There are some other markings/numbers on the front, but I can't read it.

The plates or burrs lay flat and depending on number of burrs (teeth) how fine the grind. Back to top.

If you can't get your's to work, look for a "Burr grinder". I have a Letz that runs off of the PTO of my tractor, or can be run with a belt, or can be adapted for hand grinding. With these, you can get different sized plates for different sized feed. You can also adjust the plates in or out to get fanything from flour to chunks.
