I had planned on getting a 9x20 Grizzly lathe (the g4000) and the Grizzly version of the X3 import mill (g0463). I ran into a really good deal on a solid old 10x24 Atlas lathe so I picked up that instead of the 9x20. I did get the X3 mill and I'm really happy with it. I'd given a lot of thought to the combo machines.

The mill works, but not as well as a dedicated mill and the lathe works but not as well as a dedicated lathe. Plus setup is supposedly tough when switching between modes. These are all things I've read and I don't have any practical (hands-on) knowledge of the combo machines (I've only used the dedicated machines).

For a 3-in-1 machine, this book plus the old Southbend reprint of "How To Run a Lathe" would make great companions. Of all the combination machines out there, I do like that this one does not jam the mill head into the gear head of the lathe. It is similar to Bolton's setups.

And if that should be a combo unit then so be it! However if it were a floor space issue i would most definitely buy separate "bench sized mill and lathe before a combo! I see a combo unit as a"Jack of All Trades but Master Of NONE" affair but if you learn to work within your means and tool limits you can master the tools use.
